Transmissions
2026 sound installation

Transmissions is an ambient sound installation designed to accompany Mallory Zondag’s fiber arts installation the VOID. The piece is a 23 minute loop incorporating recurring recordings from nature, civilization, and the places where they overlap. It centers on a repeating simulation of the sound of the Big Bang made by John G. Cramer at the University of Washington, which sounds similar to a plane landing or a computer powering down. It also features several sounds generated by sound installations at the Wave Farm Art Park in Acra, New York. This includes recordings from Zach Poff’s Pond Station, which uses solar powered hydrophones (underwater microphones) to record sounds from inside the Wave Farm pond, and from Soundcamp’s Test Site of Acoustic Commons 1, which uses omnidirectional microphones to record the complete environmental soundscape.

The installation is on display as part of Mallory Zondag’s exhibition at The Eleanor D. Wilson Museum at Hollins University through the end of 2026. You can hear the full piece on Bandcamp and Soundcloud.
